Abstract: [Abstract] Background The demand for pediatric sedation service outside the operating room increased rapidly in recent years. Anesthesiologists have to concern about how to provide safe and effective sedation and monitoring for these children. Objective To summarize advantages and disadvantages of depth monitoring of pediatric procedural sedation outside the operating room, and to provide current status for clinical anesthesiologists. Content Traditional scoring system make the depth of sedation quantificationally , but it has its limitations. BIS monitoring can be safely and effectively used in assessing the sedation depth outside the operating room. BIS values decreased significantly with the level of sedation deepened. However, for small infants younger than 6 months and patients with ketamine and opioids use, the readings may not be reliable. Trend It is rare in domestic study of pediatric sedation depth monitoring. The BIS application is expected to make this procedure easier and safer for anesthesiologists.
