Abstract: Objective To investigate the effects of remifentanil on proliferation and apoptosis of human colon cancer cell line COLO205. Methods Human colon cancer cell line COLO205 was cultured in vitro with and without remifentanil. The proliferation of the colon cancer cells was monitored with monotetrazolium(MTT) assay. The inhibition of cancer growth by remifentanil was characterized, including time courses, dose-response relationship, and maximal effects, etc. Additionally, apoptosis of human colon cancer cell line COLO205 was assessed with flow cytometry. Results MTT assay showed that remifentanil interfered the growth of COLO205 cells with the half maximal inhibitory concentration of (50.6±4.0), (43.6±3.7), (36.0±1.1) nmol/L when it was exposed for 24, 48, 72 h, respectively. Remifentanil also significantly reduced the apoptosis of the cancer cells[Remifentanil group: (59±9)%, control group: (71±15)%, P<0.05]. Conclusions Remifentanil inhibited the proliferation and apoptosis of colon cancer cells.
