The mechanisms in cerebral ischemia and reperfusion injury are complicated. The hypothesis on exitotoxicity mediated by NMDA receptor faces several challenges. And recent studies have focused on the kainate receptor which mediates cerebral ischemia and reperfusion. This article reviews the recent progress in Kainate receptor and downstream signaling pathways in cerebral ischemical reperfusion injury. These theories may provide basis for the further investigate of kainate receptor and clinical practice.
